For many years, Angela had tried to find hearing aids that truly worked for her. At 76, she had visited several hearing clinics and trialled different devices, but none gave her the clarity or comfort she needed. Despite her determination to persevere, the hearing aids provided elsewhere always fell short, leaving her feeling disheartened and convinced they simply weren’t for her. “I tried several hearing places and really did try but just couldn’t get on with the hearing aids provided,” says Angela.
The impact on daily life was significant.
At work, she often struggled to hear colleagues clearly. “At work I found it harder and harder to hear my boss, who sat quite a way from my desk. I had to keep going over to him, asking what he had said, as he spoke very softly. It was a real pain!” Angela recalls. And in social settings, she found herself missing out: “Talking to neighbours, if they were a distance away, got more and more difficult.”

Her experience changed when she came to Harley Street Hearing and met audiologist Matt Frost. After listening carefully to her history and understanding her challenges, Matt recommended the latest available range of Oticon’s behind-the-ear rechargeable devices as they aligned most closely with the elements of sleek style, noise reduction performance, and high sound quality, which Angela was looking for at the original assessment.
Like many other patients, Angela initially found the adjustment challenging, but over time she began to notice improvements. Matt Frost explained, “Most patients find the sound of a hearing aid unusual at first. It’s a process of reintroducing sound to the brain and auditory system, which naturally takes time to adapt to. With ongoing, tailored adjustments based on the patient’s feedback and their readiness for more sound, we fine-tune the hearing aids to make the journey smoother and less overwhelming.”
Angela can’t imagine life without her hearing aids.
Two years on since receiving her hearing aid, Angela can’t imagine life without her hearing aids. Everyday communication is easier, conversations are clearer, and she is far more relaxed in both social and professional settings. Concerns about the visibility of her hearing aids have faded, and she now wears them with pride and confidence. “I was worried about people seeing my hearing aids. Now I am very confident! I have my hair cut over my ears, and I really don’t even think about people noticing my hearing aids. I enjoy hearing, and that’s what I say to anyone who is suffering from hearing loss,” says Angela.
Angela credits the support of her audiologist, Matt Frost, as a turning point in her journey. His guidance and understanding helped her build confidence and adapt to her new device. “He was amazing and really helped me and gave me confidence. I can’t do without my hearing aids now. Matt really understood my predicament and as I said really helped me along the way,” she says.
Looking back, Angela is grateful that she didn’t give up. After ten years of struggling, she now enjoys hearing and that’s what she says to anyone who is suffering from hearing loss. She encourages others not to delay taking that first step, knowing from experience that it can make a huge difference to everyday life. With the right technology and support, Angela has achieved lasting improvements in both her hearing and her quality of life.
