Are online hearing tests accurate?

If you’re noticing signs of hearing loss, whether that’s struggling to follow conversations or turning the TV volume up more frequently, you’re not alone. Many people experience changes in their hearing over time, and most of the time it’s so gradual that it can be easy to miss.

This is where an online hearing test can help. Quick, simple and done from the comfort of your own home, it can give you an early indication into how well you’re hearing and if it’s time to see an audiologist. But, how accurate are they and how do they work? In this blog, we’ll answer some of the most commonly asked questions about online hearing tests.

Can I do a hearing test online?

Yes! And it’s easier than you might think. Online hearing tests can be done on any device, including your mobile, computer or smartphone. There’s no appointment needed, all you need is a quiet space with a reliable internet connection and a pair of headphones.

This makes online hearing tests super accessible for those who have some concerns about their hearing and are wondering whether they should take the next step of booking a professional hearing test.

Of course, online hearing tests aren’t full medical tests but they can give you an initial idea of your hearing health in just a few minutes.

How do online hearing tests work?

Online hearing tests are straightforward to follow, and usually follow a multiple choice question format followed by a series of sounds played at different volumes and frequencies.

Our online hearing test starts by asking a few questions about you to understand some of your hearing challenges and the areas that you struggle with the most. This is a much shortened version of the questions we’ll typically ask in clinic, as we take the time to really get to know you, your lifestyle and understand your concerns and needs.

The test itself is a tone test, which plays a series of sounds and asks you to adjust the volume until you hear the softest sound. This helps to measure the quietest tones you can detect at different pitches, from deep low notes to high, sharp ones. By mapping these responses, the test builds a basic picture of your hearing range and highlights any areas where your hearing may not be as strong.

At the end of the test, a report will be generated to inform you on whether or not you may be experiencing hearing loss.

Are online hearing tests reliable?

Online hearing tests can give you a helpful indication of your hearing, but they cannot replace a full assessment conducted by a qualified audiologist. Some of the main reasons for this are:

  • Equipment: Your results can be affected by the quality of your headphones and the sound settings on your device
  • Environment: Background noise at home can make it harder to hear certain sounds, affecting your score
  • Limited scope: An online test cannot examine your ear canal, check for wax build-up or diagnose medical conditions

All that being said, if you are noticing any signs of hearing loss then an online hearing test is a quick and easy way to start the process. It can be the nudge you need to get professional help sooner rather than later.

When you’re ready to go ahead with a professional hearing test, our clinical audiologists at Harley Street Hearing are available for appointments at various clinics across London.
