Oticon has introduced its latest receiver-in-canal hearing aid, Oticon Reveal, building on the technology of the popular Oticon Intent. Its key development is a new approach to artificial intelligence designed not only to make speech clearer, but also to preserve the environmental sounds that help your brain understand what is happening around you.
Oticon Reveal’s Dual AI approach
Reveal introduces AI Clarifier, which uses two AI processes simultaneously: Speech AI identifies and prioritises voices, while Context AI manages the surrounding environmental sounds.
The aim is to find a better balance between speech clarity and awareness of your surroundings. This could be particularly useful in busy environments such as restaurants, family gatherings and social events, where multiple voices and background sounds compete for your attention.
Speech processing can also be adjusted using three settings – Front, Wide and Full – allowing your audiologist to tailor how broadly the hearing aids identify voices around you.
Improved noise and feedback management
Reveal also features Wind & Handling Stabilizer 2.0, designed to reduce the impact of wind, hair and handling noise on sound quality.
Its updated Reveal Optimizer is designed to manage feedback while maintaining the amplification needed for your hearing loss. This can be particularly important if feedback or limited amplification has previously affected your hearing aid experience.
Reveal retains Oticon’s 4D Sensor technology, introduced previously with their Intent hearing aids. By combining information about your acoustic environment with head and body movements, the hearing aids can adapt to changing conversations and listening situations.
Design, connectivity and battery life
The Reveal miniRITE R has the same external design as the Oticon Intent, so despite the additional technology, it has not become larger.
The rechargeable battery provides up to around 22 hours of use from a full charge, while the optional SmartCharger provides additional portable charging.
Connectivity has also been upgraded, with support for Made for iPhone, compatible Android devices, Bluetooth LE Audio, Google Fast Pair, telecoil and Auracast.
Should you upgrade from Oticon Intent?
Oticon Reveal is an evolution of the Intent rather than a completely different concept. Its new Dual AI processing, improved feedback management, wind reduction and connectivity could make it an attractive option for some hearing aid users.
However, Oticon Intent remains an excellent hearing aid, so there is not necessarily a reason for every Intent wearer to upgrade.
The Oticon Reveal hearing aid may be particularly worth considering if you:
- Find conversations difficult in busy restaurants or groups
- Feel your current hearing aids make the world sound unnatural or closed-in
- Experience feedback or feel your hearing aids are not providing enough amplification
- Regularly struggle with wind or handling noise outdoors
- Have experienced Bluetooth or streaming issues
- Need a CROS solution for single-sided deafness
